Students from both the English as a Second Language International (ESLI) program and the English as a Second Language (ESL) methods course mingled at WTAMU on April 5.

“We have had a project linking ESL education students and international students in the ESL language program,” Catherine Wedding, an ESL instructor, said. “We’ve met three times during the semester.”

The ESLI students’ latest focus is on an elementary school presentation in the Amarillo School District.

“Our international students are presenting speeches that they will give next week at Margaret Wills Elementary School in Amarillo,” Wedding said. “The children have studied the countries [the ESLI students] represent, [and] then they sit down for discussion time.” Continue reading

Jean Walker is honored by Amarillo Women’s Network

WTAMU’s Jean Walker was awarded the 2011 Dual Career/Lifetime Achievement Award by the Amarillo Women’s Network (AWN).

Walker is WT’s Miller Professor of Entrepreneurship, and she created the Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team 18 years ago, which wins regional awards annually.

AWN member Lou Ann Garrett nominated Walker for the prestigious award in Jan. 2012.

“Being named to the Miller Professorship of Entrepreneurship is a fitting tribute to her impact in our area and a compelling reason to honor her with AWN’s Career Achievement Award!” Garrett said in her nomination letter. Continue reading

Returning to Texas from Honduras was much harder than expected.  The readjustment made at the Houston airport was minor compared to visiting my family home in Amarillo on March 8.

Leaving Las Piscinas meant abandoning a beautiful world for a more selfish one.  The first night back, I stayed in Canyon to process the transition. There was comfort in the isolation of my room, because the silence welcomed my memories. I held my Honduras jacket and fell asleep.

The next morning in the shower, I cranked the “C” knob higher remembering the cold water in Honduras.  When I returned to my room, I turned on a Spanish speaking radio station and made black coffee.  These Honduras imitations were familiar and helped confirm my journey was real. Continue reading

We gathered with families and past ambassadors at the Rick Husband International Airport on March 8. Everyone stood with supporters and luggage ready for our first flight to Houston.

After one night in Texas, we boarded a plane to Tegucigalpa, Honduras.  Greenery and layers of clouds appeared when we flew over Latin America. The beauty was similar to the mountains of a tropical Colorado or like a foggy movie set of Jurassic Park.

We experienced the sultry air of Honduras immediately after exiting the plane. The sun was beaming on our pale skin and the warm temperature did not exceed the low 80s.

We drove to Danli from Tegucigalpa, which allowed time to process our new Spanish surroundings. Continue reading

Before the spring semester began, I sympathized for the lives illustrated in Kelsey Timmerman’s book, “Where Am I Wearing?” I pitied the poor workers earning pennies a day, and I could hardly imagine what their sad lives would feel like.

Therefore, I was proud knowing I would be stepping into Central America as an ambassador of Readership WT. I felt great knowing we would bring our expertise to such an underprivileged country.

The Readership group began meeting once a week to learn, bond and prepare for the expedition. In addition to the selected freshmen, our assembly included: author Kelsey Timmerman, experienced traveler Aaron Hunt, and WTAMU’s Dr. Wade Shaffer, Kendra Campbell and Brittany Stewart.

While researching Honduran society, I found many Google images of foreigners with unexpected genuine smiles. The candid photos had more life and more sincere delight than any million dollar advertisement I’d ever seen. Continue reading
