The WT Alliance hosted Shack-A-Thon/Give-A-Goat on April 18 to fight poverty in Africa.

This time, the money raised was sent to buy goats in the Turkana region of Kenya where “it hasn’t rained for five years, and the people have to take a 24-hour trip to get water, and that water has typhoid,” Milton Jones, president of the Christian Relief Fund, said.

Over the past years, the events have raised a total of over $62,787 to buy 867 goats for Africans in need.

“[The event] was a great success,” Kent Mereness, director of the Church of Christ Bible Chair, said. “It amazes me how the selfless actions of WT students are impacting people for good on the other side of the globe.” Continue reading

Alpha Tau Omega (ATO), a fraternity at WTAMU, hosted a double elimination co-ed softball tournament April 13-14 at the Buffalo Sports Park to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House in Amarillo.

“We have worked with the Ronald McDonald House for many years,” Miguel Sosa, ATO president, said. “They have an amazing staff and, for those of us who have had the privilege of meeting the families and children who have been helped by the Ronald McDonald House, they are very appreciative and thankful for what we do.”

He said ATO wants to do everything possible to help these families and children.

“Whether it is donating time or raising funds, getting to see the smile on their face is truly a heartwarming experience, and is one of the greatest feelings in the world,” Sosa said. Continue reading

“The awareness week is a week of activities that will help get the word out to other people about music therapy,” Music Therapy major Erin Feuerstein said.

Feuerstein said that the main goal is to get the word out to the students on what music therapy is and how it can help people.

“This is our first year so we’re starting kind of small to see how the week goes,” she said. “And to see how we can grow in the future.” Continue reading

Students from both the English as a Second Language International (ESLI) program and the English as a Second Language (ESL) methods course mingled at WTAMU on April 5.

“We have had a project linking ESL education students and international students in the ESL language program,” Catherine Wedding, an ESL instructor, said. “We’ve met three times during the semester.”

The ESLI students’ latest focus is on an elementary school presentation in the Amarillo School District.

“Our international students are presenting speeches that they will give next week at Margaret Wills Elementary School in Amarillo,” Wedding said. “The children have studied the countries [the ESLI students] represent, [and] then they sit down for discussion time.” Continue reading

WT will host Superhero 5K

The Student-Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) is partnering with Amarillo Area CASA to host the CASA Superhero 5K on April 14.

The race will begin at the WTAMU Pedestrian Mall and will cover a 3.1 mile stretch of the entire campus, with a Kids 1K and Family Walk at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K starting at 9:00 a.m.

The concept of the 5K originally began as a class assignment.

Daniel Zewde, student athlete and Mass Communication major, explained that an assignment in a Public Relations and Publicity class he took was to develop a campaign for an organization. He said that as an athlete he looks for opportunities to get involved in the community and CASA was a good fit.

He then talked to Courtney Lee, director of Student-Athlete Services, about making his idea a reality.

“I ran it by her and she really liked the idea,” Zewde said. Continue reading

Returning to Texas from Honduras was much harder than expected.  The readjustment made at the Houston airport was minor compared to visiting my family home in Amarillo on March 8.

Leaving Las Piscinas meant abandoning a beautiful world for a more selfish one.  The first night back, I stayed in Canyon to process the transition. There was comfort in the isolation of my room, because the silence welcomed my memories. I held my Honduras jacket and fell asleep.

The next morning in the shower, I cranked the “C” knob higher remembering the cold water in Honduras.  When I returned to my room, I turned on a Spanish speaking radio station and made black coffee.  These Honduras imitations were familiar and helped confirm my journey was real. Continue reading

On April 14, the Amarillo Zoo will be hosting a clean up project in which participants will help clear up lake and creek shorelines throughout Thompson Park. The event will last from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

“We selected the lakes since they are adjacent to the zoo and are enjoyed by many visitors in addition to local and migratory wildlife,” Mike Boley, Amarillo Zoo visitor services coordinator, said. “Each year thousands of waterfowl and songbirds visit the lake for shelter and food, and keeping the water and shorelines clear of trash benefits them. Plus, other wildlife including turtles, frogs, fish, insects and small mammals depend on the lakes for survival.”

Volunteers are invited to attend a free hotdog barbecue that starts at 1 p.m., right after the clean up. Continue reading
