“There will always be something to argue about.” Former president speaks on the importance of cooperation

Former President Bill Clinton spoke at the First United Bank Center on April 24. The former president attracted people young and old, who listened to his remarks on the Flight 93 Memorial, his time as president and the current issues in America and abroad.

“The most interesting thing to me, today is what I think is a disconnect in what works in America in real life and what works in America in politics,” Clinton said. “In politics, what works is division and argument…what works in real life is when we have networks of cooperation with people who know different things, have different skills, and look at problems in different ways.”

Clinton pointed to successful areas of the country, such as Silicon Valley and the rise of computer simulation technology in Florida, but also brought attention to problems such as rising childhood obesity, the energy crisis, and healthcare. Continue reading

Former President George W. Bush will host the second annual Warrior 100K at Palo Duro Canyon State Park on April 26-28. The 100-kilometer mountain bike ride is dedicated to U.S. servicemen and women wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan.

“I look forward to spending time with these wounded warriors in a beautiful part of Texas,” Bush said in The Bush Center web site. “The W100 is a great way to remind all our fellow citizens of the unbelievable courage, skill, and sacrifice of those who wear the uniform of the United States.”

Twenty veterans will participate in this ride which, according to The Bush Center web site, “highlights the courage and sacrifice of U.S. military personnel who served their country honorably and were significantly injured during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.”

According to a representative from The Bush Center, the event is not opened to the public and it is dedicated to the 20 warriors and their families. Continue reading

The ESLI students’ latest focus is on an elementary school presentation in the Amarillo School District.

“Our international students are presenting speeches that they will give next week at Margaret Wills Elementary School in Amarillo,” Wedding said. “The children have studied the countries [the ESLI students] represent, [and] then they sit down for discussion time.” Continue reading

Educational level increases earnings in the U.S.

Educational level increases earnings, which may encourage more people to finish high school and pursue further education.

The trend at Amarillo High School has been slightly higher than the state average of high school graduates even though the total number of high school graduates has declined slightly between 2003 and 2009.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, education has paid off with the more educated workers earning more money. In 1975, only 63 percent of adults had a high school diploma, while in 2000, 84 percent did. In 1975, only 14 percent had a bachelor’s degree or higher while in 2000, 26 percent had at least a bachelor’s degree.
