The No. 13 WTAMU Lady Buffs volleyball team won their sixth consecutive Lone Star Conference championship with three wins in The Box on Nov. 10-12. The Lady Buffs swept Texas A&M-Kingsville, Tarleton State, and the No. 18 Angelo State Rambelles over the weekend to claim the conference crown.

WT swept the Javelinas in the first round on Nov. 10 25-17, 25-16 and 25-14. With a 15-14 score in set one, the Lady Buffs went on a 9-1 run to take a 24-15 lead and eventually win the set. In game three, WT had an 18-13 advantage when they went on a 7-1 run to advance to the semifinals.

WT defeated the Tarleton State TexAnns 25-22, 25-20 and 25-15 in front of an inspired crowd on Nov. 11 in the semifinals. The Lady Buffs trailed 10-13 in game one when a 9-2 run gave them a 19-15 lead they would not lose. WT had a 14-11 lead in the third set and extended it to 21-12 with a 7-1 run that all but clinched their spot in the finals. The crowd provided the Lady Buffs with a boost during the match. WT Volleyball Team Clinch Sixth Conference Title

The No. 13 WTAMU Lady Buffs volleyball team traveled to Denton to battle the Texas Women’s University Pioneers on Nov. 5. WT rallied to win the match 23-25, 21-25, 27-25, 25-22, and 15-9; the win gives the Lady Buffs their sixth consecutive regular season Lone Star Conference title, and seventeenth overall.

The Pioneers opened game one with an 8-4 lead. Trailing 13-16, WT scored three straight to tie. The Lady Buffs were able to tie TWU two more times, but were never able to get a lead in the set.

WT had a 9-7 lead early in game two when the Pioneers scored three straight to take a 9-10 lead into a Lady Buff timeout. With the score tied at 15, a 5-1 TWU run gave them a 20-16 advantage they would not lose. Continue reading

Lady Buffs Beat Lions in Four Sets

The No. 13 WTAMU volleyball team traveled to Commerce to take on the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions on Nov. 3. WT defeated TAMUC in four sets by 25-18, 23-25, 25-20 and 25-22, improving to 29-2 overall and 18-1 in the Lone Star Conference.

The Lady Buffs trailed the Lions 5-7 early in the first set. A 7-1 run gave WT a 12-8 advantage going into a TAMUC timeout. Up 18-17, another 7-1 run gave the Lady Buffs the first set victory.

WT opened game two by taking a 9-2 lead into a Lions timeout. TAMUC battled back and cut the Lady Buffs’ lead to 15-14. The Lions went on a 6-2 run with the Lady Buffs up 21-19 to even the match at 1-1. Continue reading

No. 13 Lady Buffs Sweep Bulldogs

The No. 13 WTAMU Lady Buffs volleyball team traveled to Weatherford, Okla. on Nov. 31 to battle former Lone Star Conference member Southwestern Oklahoma State University. WT defeated SWOSU 26-24, 25-22 and 25-14 to improve to 28-2 overall.

The Lady Buffs opened game one by taking a 12-7 lead. The Bulldogs went on a 7-2 run to tie the score at 14. With WT up 24-22, SWOSU scored two to tie, but the Lady Buffs got the next two to take the set 26-24.

WT built leads of 6-2 and 15-8 early in the second set. While up 21-14, the Lady Buffs were outscored 8-4. However, WT was still able to win the game 25-22.

“We were still hung over from our win against ASU and could not mentally bring it,” said Head Coach Jason Skoch. “SWOSU came to play and to fight.”

SWOSU opened set three with a 6-7 lead. WT came back with a 13-2 run to take a 19-9 lead. Despite outscoring the Lady Buffs 6-5 at the end of the set, the Bulldogs fell short of continuing the match. Continue reading

Lady Buffs come from behind to beat Angelo State

The No. 12 WTAMU Lady Buffs volleyball team hosted the Abilene Christian Wildcats on Oct. 27 for Senior Night. WT swept ACU 25-16, 25-5 and 25-11, boosting their record to 26-2 overall and 16-1 in Lone Star Conference action.

Erika Dupree was the lone senior the Lady Buffs honored. Fittingly enough, she had a huge game with three kills, two solo blocks and four block assists and she picked up three digs on the night.

“[Dupree’s] is the type of person everybody gets along with, but still respects,” Head Coach Jason Skoch said. “The team plays hard for her.” Continue reading

No. 12 Lady Buffs Tame Mustangs

The No. 12 WTAMU Lady Buffs volleyball team traveled to Wichita Falls on Oct. 25 to face the Midwestern State Mustangs. WT dropped MSU in straight sets 25-22, 25-10 and 25-12, improving their record to 25-2 overall and 15-1 in the Lone Star Conference.

The Lady Buffs struggled through most of the first set. WT was able to keep MSU within striking distance at 19-20, however. The Lady Buffs got in rhythm to put an end to the first set with a 6-2 run.

WT dominated the second set going up 17-3. The Mustangs went on a brief 6-1 run to pull the score to 18-9. The Lady Buffs squashed the rally with a 7-1 run of their own to finish the set.

MSU built a 9-7 lead early in the third game, as they traded points with WT. The Lady Buffs, however, flexed their muscles by ending the set and the match with an 18-3 run.

“That was a good game because we did that to a good team,” Head Coach Jason Skoch said.

Junior Stormi Lancaster and sophomore Ashley Davis each registered 11 kills. Junior Sarah Martin also had 10 kills on the night. WT was led defensively by junior Lacy Hayes, who had 14 digs and 35 assists.

The Lady Buffs return to The Box on Oct. 27 to square off against Abilene Christian for Senior Night. First serve is set for 7 p.m.

Lady Buffs avenge only conference loss to Tarleton

The No. 14 WTAMU Lady Buff volleyball team hosted the Tarleton State TexAnns, who ended the Lady Buffs record 87 game conference winning streak back on Sept. 17, in The Box on Oct. 22. WT avenged their only conference loss with a 25-18, 29-27 and 25-16 sweep of TSU.

The first set began with the Lady Buffs jumping out to a 12-5 lead early. The TexAnns battled back to get the score to within three at 19-16 heading into a WT timeout. The Lady Buffs proceeded to go on a 6-2 run to take the first game.

The second game was a thriller that went right down to the wire. Trailing 21-17, TSU went on a 7-2 run to take a 23-24 lead. After each team traded three points, WT scored three straight to win the set 29-27.

With the TexAnns up 4-5 in game three, the Lady Buffs went on a 13-1 run to take a 17-6 lead. TSU answered with a 7-2 run to bring the score to 19-13. However, WT would outscore the TexAnns 6-3 to take the match. Continue reading
